Trot for Turkey

Happy Day After Thanksgiving!!

Hope everyone had a wonderful holiday. Mine started bright and early since David and I had to drive from our apartment from just north of Boston to Whitinsville which is on the border of Rhode Island. So we were up and ready at 6:30 to take the 1+ hour drive. We started out with an English muffin with Teddie peanut butter and bananas and a cup of coffee (not pictured). And thankfully because of the holiday, there was little to no traffic.

We arrived in Whitinsville at 7:45 (we drove fast, efficiently!) and the gun didn’t go off until 8:10. We met up with my parents in the Community Center and headed out to the starting line. Usually during races, I’m so bad about taking pictures because it’s always left in the car. I have to start getting better at that. :-P We only waited about 5 minutes until the gun went off. There were about 800 people and we all kind of bottlenecked at the beginning because we all had to cross over this 6 foot long timing strip. But after that, we were on our way.

I spent the first 2 miles with my mom, dad and David. The first mile was 10:05 (which felt great because even though it wasn’t windy, the weather was in the low 30s). I started to pull away slightly after that and finished the second mile in 19:30. After about mile 3, I was ahead of my parents and David had dropped back when he found our mechanic giving out water. After mile 4, I had a burst of energy and ran smooth and steady the last mile. I don’t have a fancy watch so I don’t know what my splits are, but they are negative, which is a first. Usually I got out too fast and then get winded. But I ended up finishing in 48:55. It felt great. :-) David was able to catch up and finished a second before me and my parents came in around 51:30.

Me and my mom

My post-run oatmeal with greek yogurt, almonds, honey, and cran-raisins.

After we got ready at my parents, we headed up to Beverly to have dinner at my Grammys. Since starting this blog, I’ve been focused mainly on taking pictures of my food and not people! And this post is no exception. So here is my day in food:

Turkey, mashed taters, cranberry sauce, creamed onions, stuffing and sweet potato casserole

I had a few :-P

It was also my grandmother’s 80th birthday that day so we toasted her with some Korbel. I also had a Sebastiani Chardonnay from Sonoma Valley and oh my, it was so oaky and buttery. And apparently only 8 bucks at Kappy’s?! Yes please!

It was an overall great day with David, my parents, Grammy and my aunt and uncle who brought their golden/border collie mix Macy. She was a little bugger though! Not much of a begging dog but when we weren’t looking, she snatched one of the turkey legs off of the counter and was gnawing on it under the table. She had cleaned it by the time we knew what she was doing. And sadly, I did not get a picture. It probably would have been blurry too with all of the running around she did. Next time though.

What is your favorite Thanksgiving memory?? One that probably really stood out to me was Thanksgiving 2004. My cousin Mae was just born that July and my Grandmama had been sick cancer. It was the first holiday with Mae and the last with Grandmama. We had my mom’s side of the family at the house and it just felt so warm and homey. One holiday that will always be near and dear to me.
