BAA 10k

This morning I ran my first ever 10k! And it went very well! The morning started out cool but humid. I was starting to think back to the half marathon but this weather was a bit more tolerable.

The plan was for my dad to run at my pace because he tends to go out too fast and die out at the end of a long distance. He’s great at 5k’s, but decided to follow my pace since I’m the distance runner of the bunch. Winking smile My mom started at the 10 minute mile pacers; Dad and I were around the 9 minutes.

The route had us starting and ending between the Boston Common and the Public Garden. The run through Commonwealth Ave was great because it was all shade. The skies were overcast for the most part but the sun was coming through at a few points. The stretch up Comm Ave where the 5k turnaround was was long, slightly uphill and not shaded. Thank goodness the sky was still overcast, otherwise that stretch would have been brutal. My dad and I trucked on (him inching out in front of me a few times; he slowed down to let me catch up though) and we crossed the half way at ~28 minutes. We also saw my mom on the way back down! She was looking good! Smile

After about 4 miles, I was starting to think that we had gone out a bit too fast. The first two miles were in the high 8’s and I could start to feel myself getting a bit slower. After mile 5, I was doing little surges when I felt that I had the energy. My dad looked back at me and said “Only 1 more mile!” My response? “It doesn’t make it any easier!” Smile with tongue out

But we get around the corner back towards the Common and I heard Backstreet Boys playing on the loud speaker. I kicked my heels up and broke ahead of my dad and we were done!

A successful first 10k I would say! I didn’t bring my camera to the race but we did get some officials to take some family photos! I’ll link back once they are up. I did get a nice post race picture of me and all my sweaty glory (and cool medal!)

Yesterday my parents and I went to Marathon Sports and I bought some new sneakers! Asics Kayanos. Out of the 4 that the associate had me try on, these were the most comfortable and apparently I ran a lot straighter in these than in the others (I tend to over pronate too much on my left side). Can’t wait to take these puppies out! Smile

Right now it’s 9:30PM and I am off to bed. Tomorrow is my first day at the club lounge at the Intercon and I have to be up by 4! Surprised smile It’s going to be a long week but I hope to pop in every now and then.

Hope you all had a wonderful weekend! Have a great week!

Excellent job in the race! That weather does sound a bit more ideal than what we experienced last month haha
Kayanos are the only running shoes I wear, I hope you enjoy them!
Good luck on your first day :)

congratulations on finishing your first 10K…and with your dad! 10K is one of my favorite distances to race because it’s not so short you’re sprinting the whole time and feeling like you’re going to die but not long enough that you have to really hold back.

hope you survived your 4 a.m. wake up call!

Thanks Jen! It was a nice distance. I’m looking forward to my next one in October. Hopefully less humid.

I did survive! All four of them. :-)

You did a great job! Congrats on your first 10k :) Did you like the distance? I’ve only done one 10k and for some reason I found it really hard! I didn’t know how to pace myself, haha.

For my first 10k, pacing myself was tough. I went out too fast and died out near the end. I need to learn to get negative splits better. :-) But it is a nice middle ground distance.

You did so great for your first 10k! I’m hoping to run that one next year! It’s so fun that you get to run with your parents.. mine don’t exactly partake in my running; they are sideline supporters. The medal is pretty cool too!

You should totally run it! The course is great; not too hilly and relatively shaded. And the t-shirts were nice. :-)
