A Successful 5k

What a great morning for a 5k.

I had actually signed up for this race just last week. I usually don’t run races in the summer because it is just too hot. But I was up for it because, you know, I’ve done it before. And it’s only a 5k. And I got to run with my parents again. :-)

For those of you who are um, living in the US, you know about the intense heat waves that have graced us for the last few days. In Boston, the temperature got up to 103* on Friday. I was less than pleased to think that this morning wouldn’t be too much different. The forecast was for a high of 97* with less humidity (relief!). But thankfully when we woke up, the skies were overcast and there was a breeze.

When we reached the middle school, where the race started, the clouds were quite ominous (can I just say that ever since I learned about this word in elementary school, I LOVE using it. Haha). About 20 minutes before the race started, it was thundering and lightening and the rain came pouring down. It felt awesome!

The first mile really flew by. The course was rolling and overall very enjoyable. My first mile was 8:14. The second mile, the rain let up but it was still cloudy. Could feel myself slowing up a bit. By mile 2, my watch said 17:15. On the third mile, there was a short, steep hill before going back to the school to run around the track. The hill definitely wasn’t as bad as expected and I trucked it up. Around the track I went and I finished in 26:55. Not my fastest, but it was my third fastest!

I have to say that I felt great this entire race. Probably the only downside was the lack of negative splits. I never felt too tired, I was definitely hydrated enough and the fat drops of rain felt great.

Stats
Time: 26:55
Pace: 8:40
Division: 6/20
Overall: 68/187

My dad ran it in 24 minutes and my mom ran it in 30 minutes. And she got FIRST place in her age group!! She would joke to me that all I have to do is run small races when I’m in my 50s and I’m bound to place! :-)

The day before, I made an extremely conscience effort to hydrate-hydrate-hydrate throughout the entire day. And I’m glad to say that I did and was not too thirsty while running. It was just overall a great race! I was so happy that I signed up for it.

Sorry for my absence lately; I’ve had such a busy week! I had a concierge dinner, which I will recap later, and I had a great beach day on Wednesday. Work has been busy and I’ve just overall been busy. But I will get back to posting soon! I was also linked by Jen to do the 7 Links that’s going around the blog world and I have to go through my posts! I’ve only been blogging for less than a year but hopefully I can find some good stuff for you guys!

Hope you are all having a great weekend!
