It’s very rare that I come away from a concierge dinner disappointed (and still hungry) but last night that’s what happened. I was looking forward to this dinner because I rarely make it down to the South End and was intrigued by the Southern cooking that the menu provided.
When I arrived, my first thought was to get a cocktail. They had some great selections and I decided on the Bubble Love (white rum, peach, Prosecco with grenadine cherry garnish). It was bubbly and refreshing. I was a fan. And unfortunately, that’s where the good stuff stopped.
When we sat down to our table, we were slowly given out appetizers to share. There were mussels, fried chicken, beet salad (which I have to say was good as well) and tuna tartar. The mussels were good, but the fried chicken barely had any chicken and were mostly batter.
Throughout the evening, the service was very slow. We noticed that the place was packed for a Wednesday night (Live jazz – very talented performer that night!) and there were probably only 2 or 3 servers for the whole place. We ended up chatting with a couple next to us who were waiting 20-25 minutes for their drinks. It appeared not a whole lot of people in the restaurant were happy.
When we were finally able to order, I got the jambalaya. I don’t have it very often and the mixture of mussels, shrimp, chicken and sausage looked really good. And it actually did taste good, but because it was so hot (spicy hot) it was difficult to enjoy. I could feel it sitting with me, even this morning. Also with my meal, I had the Moscow Mule cocktail (Russian standard vodka, fresh lime topped with ginger beer). It was light and refreshing. It helped to quell the heat!
For dessert, they only have two items to offer: red velvet cake and chocolate cake. I love red velvet! Sadly, there’s I did not like. It seemed to have no flavor at all. And the chocolate cake’s flavor had a slight hint of…rubbing alcohol? Blech. One bite and I was done. I love desserts but I couldn’t even get myself to eat more than two bites of the red velvet cake. Very disappointed.
In addition to the spotty service and bad food, about an hour and a half into our dinner the manager had us get up because they had the table reserved for a party that was waiting at the bar. So they had us get up and stand at the bar for the rest of the night. After that happened, I left the restaurant. I was sorely disappointed in my experience and will probably never go back. I would like to say that it’s a good place for jazz and cocktails, but with Wally’s Café being right around the corner, I wouldn’t even bother.
All concierge dinners are complimentary but these opinions are that of my own.
