Last night David and I had the pleasure of attending the first Square Meal foodie crawl in Union Square, Somerville. I won 2 tickets on Renee’s blog and I was so excited because I had never been to a progressive dinner before! The restaurants participating were Casa B, The Independent, and Journeyman.
We had appetizers and drinks at Casa B, which is a tapas with a Columbian influence. The décor of the restaurant was so simple and beautiful. It had two floors; we ate on the top floor.
To start, they had plantains and an asparagus dip for us to munch on. I have been loving on plantains lately! For drinks we had red wine sangria that had a lovely taste of all spice. I loved the kick it gave the drink. David also snagged a sample of their mojito which was perfectly made.
For the vegetarian entrée it was a tasting plate of sweet plantain omelet with “grandma’s ketchup” and micro greens on top of a piece of bread, egg roll and a cheese puff with aioli sauce. Everything tasted so fresh and the flavors mixed so well together. I would love to come back to this restaurant for a full dinner.
Casa B is located at 253 Washington St, Somerville, MA.
Our next stop was the Independent for the main course.
I’ve heard some great things about their beer and cocktail selection but reviews about their food have been so so. For a drink, we were given a local brew of Pretty Little Things. I loved this beer. It wasn’t too hoppy but had some great flavor to it. It went down smooth.
For the vegetarian dinner, we were given a plate of local vegetables braised in their PLT beer, garnished with large slices of parmesan cheese. The veggies were perfectly cooked and flavorful. I would have preferred some kind of protein though. But it was only one stop on our foodie journey. I did like their atmosphere and because of the gorgeous weather out, the windows were wide open. I can see myself enjoying some beer here.
The Independent is located at 75 Union Square in Somerville, MA.
The last stop on our foodie tour was the Journeyman for dessert. The concept of the restaurant is a fixed 5 or 7 course menu, based off of what’s in season and local. Our drink was a delicious, citrusy blend. Unfortunately, the ingredients are alluding me. For dessert, we had bergamot ice cream with toffee style pudding and a sponge-like, citrus cake. All of the flavors were so distinctively different yet blended well together. I tried to get a little bit of every flavor in each bite. Great way to end a great evening.
Diners having a good time!
Journeyman is located at 9 Sanborn Ct, Somerville, MA.
Even though this event was complimentary, these opinions are that of my own. And thank you to Amy for putting on the giveaway for the tickets! David and I had a great time!
