It’s been 3 months since David and I moved into our new house. It’s definitely a slow moving process to get everything finished but I’m glad to see a lot has come together in that short amount of time.
Why yes, our house is three different colors. We were able to get a great deal on siding by picking up the remnants from other construction sites. So that resulted in our patchwork house.
In the spring we will paint it so that it matches the lighter color.
David and I never wanted traditional overhead cabinets since we wanted the eye sight to continue through the space. We had originally planned on open shelving but the weight vs. thickness would have been an issue. So David bought some birch wood and constructed these two cabinets: one for our pots & pans, plates, bowls, mugs and the other for my cookbooks. Eventually we will clear coat them because we love the contrasting look.
Because we have deep window wells, David decided to build them as nightstands and extra shelving (it’s also in the living room, kitchen and dining room). The material is actually pine stair treads that he cut down and sanded. They’re strong, durable and works well with our house design. I love them.
Yesterday we decided to visit Ikea and tackle our closet project. We found the MALM brand of drawers and installed them last night. The shelf in the middle I purchased in college and it just happened to fit perfectly. We’ll eventually get nicer open shelves in that area. And we’re going to get sliders to make it look more closet-like.
And that’s where we’re at with the house! We’re able to start on all of these projects because we were finally able to close on our mortgage loan. Up next is getting the loft carpeted, building the stairs and rails, and installing the solar panels on the roof!
2013 is starting off on a great foot. ![]()
Have you done any house projects lately? What’s your favorite room in the house? Right now it’s definitely the kitchen, but I can’t wait for our office to be done.

Love it! I can’t believe it’s been 3 months already. So crazy. Regardless, the house looks fantastic. I hope I get a chance to come out and visit again soon and see it in person!
