With my new work schedule and David being busy with his job, we rarely get a time where we can go out for dinner and really enjoy ourselves (aka: not have to worry about work commitments). Last week I received an e-mail inviting us out to try the new Besito Mexican Restaurant at the Burlington Mall, and after a few reservations fell through, we were finally able to find time yesterday evening to enjoy our night out.
The ambiance was warm, yet a bit upscale which I felt fit perfectly with the Burlington Mall vibe. It almost felt like stepping in to a well-to-do Mexican villa. I loved the wall of flickering candles. Having been to Mexico, albeit almost 10 years ago, I was interested in seeing how authentic the meals would be. I will preface by saying that everything was fantastic.
We started off with a basket of thick cut tortilla chips that had just the right amount of salt. I’m surprised we didn’t demolish the entire basket! Alongside the chips I ordered, on the suggestion of our lovely server, the Besito Patron Margarita: Patron reposado tequila, Cointreau, pomegranate-tangerine juice, fresh squeezed lime. It was the perfect balance of tequila and sweetness. Had I not been feeling it after the first one, I probably would have ordered a second.
As a before-dinner treat, the manager brought us both Tauquitos de Camarones: Crispy shrimp, shredded organic romaine lettuce, pico de gallo, chipotle cream salsa, cilantro, queso fresco. The flavors were amazing together. It was abundant with shrimp and the spiciness balanced well with the cream salsa. David mentioned he could easily make a meal out of them.
To go along with the delicious tortilla chips, I ordered the Queso Fundido: Baked queso chihuahua, rajas, chorizo, cilantro, white onion. Although the dish was delightfully cheesy and salty, it would have been even better with larger chunks of chorizo. It was almost like chorizo bits (like bacon bits). However we had no problem finishing the whole dish. They even added small corn tortillas alongside it, to enjoy it with. A couple were thoroughly enjoyed by me; many more enjoyed by David.
There were so many dishes that I wanted to order and my eyes even kept wandering to the Enchiladas Suizas. I typically order that when I dine at a Mexican restaurant, but I wanted to branch out and try something different. My choice ended up being the Pastor: Pineapple and guajillo marinated pork, grilled pineapple salsa, avocado salsa verde. I love pineapple and was interested to see how it would be incorporated in a Mexican dish. It was served fajita style with corn tortillas, rice and beans. I made a couple of wraps but ended up eating most of it straight from skillet. The pork was perfectly crispy and juicy, and the pineapples acidity was the perfect complement to the slight charred flavor.
David ordered the Enchiladas Mixtas: Skirt steak, grilled chicken, chorizo, guajillo cream salsa, queso fresco. He devoured his dish and deemed it tasty. He even had a bite of my dish and was very impressed.
We were too full to order dessert but the server gave us two churros to enjoy, as well as a little doll to put under our pillows that are supposed to help take away the bad dreams.
Overall, David and I had an amazing time. The service was attentive and quick; the food and drinks were perfectly executed, and we have already decided to go back and make a meal out of their appetizers.
Dinner was complimentary but all opinions are 100% my own.
